Steroid Joint Injections

Steroid joint injections are an effective pain relief to help joint pain caused by inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis. Joint pain can also be due to wear and tear of the joint (osteoarthritis) and surrounding tendons. It can also cause the surrounding bursa to become inflamed which can further exacerbate joint pain. This usually occurs in the shoulder and knee joints.

Joint injections can be ultrasound guided or blind. They usually take 2 weeks to become effective. There are certain side effects and risks associated with the steroid injection which include infection/bleeding, steroid flare and localised skin discolouration/dimpling. We have made an in-depth educational video down below on the procedure, risks, side effects and what to do before and after you injection!
